It began in 2004 in the Venezuela-Cuba context, where Venezuelan patients were transported to the Republic of Cuba for the treatment of ophthalmologic problems; in this context, 176,000 Venezuelan patients have benefited.
In August 2005, the Sandino Commitment was initiated, signed by Cuba’s President Fidel Castro Ruz and Venezuela’s Hugo Chávez Frías, which proposed the treatment of 6,000,000 underprivileged Latin American and Caribbean patients with visual problems over a span of 10 years.
Today, CONVIASA transports hundreds of patients to Venezuela to undergo surgeries for various visual conditions. In this regard, since 2006 the airline has operated 506 flights, transporting 78,416 people.
